Metrorail ticket prices and fare zones
PRASA prices Metrorail tickets by how far you travel. These are the fares valid from 1 August 2025. Every route page shows the estimated price for that trip.
Zone 2 (16–40 km): R12 single
Single R12, return R24, weekly R70 (Monday to Friday) or R80 (Monday to Saturday), monthly R220. For example, Cape Town to Muizenberg is about 25 km by rail.
Zone 3 (41–60 km): R14 single
Single R14, return R28, weekly R80 (Monday to Friday) or R100 (Monday to Saturday), monthly R250. For example, Cape Town to Stellenbosch is about 48 km by rail.
Zone 4 (over 60 km): R15 single
Single R15, return R30, weekly R90 (Monday to Friday) or R120 (Monday to Saturday), monthly R280. For example, Cape Town to Wellington is about 72 km by rail.
Discounts
Off-peak travel between 09:00 and 14:00 is 40% off single and return tickets. Pensioners and military veterans get 50% off single and return tickets off-peak, and scholars in full uniform get 50% off single and return tickets at any time.
